Lime Rock Park

The American Appalachian E-Sports IMSA Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship opened its doors at Lime Rock Park on Saturday, July 18th, and it was #35 Alex Hernandez who made the strongest possible statement in Round 1 of the new campaign. Starting from pole, Hernandez led 32 of 39 laps around the Connecticut short course to take the 200-point haul, with two lead changes across the afternoon adding some genuine drama to what was otherwise a commanding performance from the #35 machine. The race ran green throughout all 39 laps, with zero cautions shaping an uninterrupted battle from start to finish.

Hernandez's main challenger was #36 Ryder Poe, who shadowed the leader from his P2 starting slot and actually held the point for 7 laps during the race's two lead changes. Poe's clean run — one of only two drivers to finish without an incident — ultimately left him 25 points adrift at the checkered flag, taking second place and 175 points back to his garage. #123 Steve Pierson rounded out the podium in third after starting fourth, gaining one position over the course of the race and banking 150 points in his series debut. Notably, all three podium finishers are recording their first series wins or podium results, with zero prior victories between them in this championship heading into Round 1.

The hard charger award belonged to #469 Brian Bell, who climbed four positions from 14th on the grid to cross the line in 10th place. Bell's advance through the field was the most ground gained by any driver on the day, though it came at a cost — his 8-point incident tally was the highest of any finisher. #54 Maxwell Waite also drew attention for less favorable reasons, accumulating 12 incidents across the 39 laps while finishing fifth from fifth on the grid. Dan Kopinski in the #64 slipped one position from his P3 starting spot to finish fourth, collecting 120 points but leaving Lime Rock knowing he'll need to be sharper in the battles ahead.

With the standings taking shape after Round 1, Hernandez sits atop the table with 200 points, 25 clear of Poe and 50 ahead of Pierson. Kopinski is fourth on 120 points and Waite fifth on 105, meaning the top five are covered by 95 points through just one round. The gap between Hernandez and the rest of the top five is tight enough that a single strong result from any of his rivals could reshape the picture entirely — Lime Rock may have delivered a clear opening-round leader, but this championship fight is very much alive.
