At Tsukuba Circuit on Saturday evening, #35 Alex Hernandez converted his pole position into a Round 3 victory, leading 27 of 33 laps to claim his second win of the season in the AAES Whelen Mazda MX5 Cup Championship. With four lead changes across the 33-lap distance — including two caution periods totaling six laps that kept the field bunched — Hernandez was never truly out of reach at the front, and his lone incident point was not enough to cost him control of the race. It was a measured, composed drive from the #35 camp at a technical short circuit where mistakes come quickly.

Behind Hernandez, #54 Maxwell Waite charged from his third starting position to claim second, even leading one lap during the race's shuffled order. Waite's five incidents will raise some eyebrows in the paddock, but the result is unambiguous — it was his second win-or-podium weekend of the season, and P2 was enough to extend his points advantage at the top of the standings. #90 Zack Yordy rounded out the podium in third, recovering from a P4 start to claim his first podium of the season, adding 150 points to a standings position that puts him firmly in the title conversation.

The hard charger award belongs to #157 Robert Davis, who launched from 12th on the grid all the way to sixth at the checkered flag — the biggest position gain in the field by a clear margin. Davis's six-place charge came in a 14-car field over 33 laps of a tight Japanese circuit, which makes the feat all the more impressive. His 90 points haul keeps him relevant in the championship picture, and at just 160 points back of leader Waite, Davis cannot be written off. The cost, however, was nine incident points — the highest tally of any finisher — a number that will need to come down if Davis wants to sustain this momentum.

The standings heading out of Round 3 tell a compelling story for the rest of the season. Waite leads on 480 points, but Hernandez's back-to-back strong results have him at 400 — just 80 points adrift — after Hernandez's Round 3 maximum haul of 200 points. Ryder Poe sits third on 350 points despite not appearing in the top five finishers today, meaning his gap to Waite is tightening under pressure from multiple directions. Dan Kopinski in fourth on 330 points and Yordy in fifth on 320 points mean that five drivers are separated by just 160 points with rounds still remaining, setting up what should be a fiercely contested run to the end of the season.
