Eldon Stewart turned what appeared to be a supporting role into the starring one at Kansas Speedway on Wednesday night, driving the #1 machine to victory in Round 7 of the ATC Cup Series. Stewart started second and crossed the line first after four lead changes across 79 laps, but the night belonged in large part to pole-sitter Gio Turpin for 47 of them. Four cautions slowed the proceedings across 12 laps, keeping the field bunched and the outcome uncertain deep into the race.
Turpin, piloting the #84, set the pace from the opening green flag and spent the majority of the evening at the front, leading 47 of 79 laps in what was a commanding display of pace. But when it mattered most, Stewart found a way around him, and Turpin's evening ended in second — respectable on points but bittersweet given how much of the race he controlled. Jason Nieto in the #95 rounded out the podium in third after starting seventh, gaining four positions across 79 laps with five incidents on his card — a clean enough run to deliver his first recorded ATC Cup Series podium.
The hard charger award belonged to Jordan Traas in the #79, who charged from 15th on the grid all the way to seventh at the flag — a gain of eight positions that represented one of the most aggressive runs of the night. Mitchell Williams in the #54 also deserves mention, running from sixth to fourth with zero incidents and leading 28 laps along the way, suggesting his car had genuine speed throughout. Meanwhile, the Shoemaker brothers suffered matching disasters — Keith in the #4 fell from fourth to 15th and Bryce in the #25 tumbled from fifth to 17th, each losing more than ten positions while combining for 12 incidents between them.
The standings after Kansas are as tight as the racing itself. Ian Blanchard and Gio Turpin sit tied atop the ATC Cup Series standings at 170 points apiece, with Riley Bennett lurking just four points back in third. Mitchell Williams sits fourth at 158 points, and Randy Coryer rounds out the top five with 151. Blanchard, who finished eighth tonight, holds the tiebreaker edge in some form over Turpin, but the margin is razor-thin with both drivers clearly capable of winning races outright. The fight for the top spot in this series is very much alive heading out of Round 7.
