Carlos Acosta brought the #2 machine to victory lane at Auto Club Speedway on Thursday night, earning his first win in the Elite NextGen Series after starting third and leading 14 of 70 laps in a race that saw eight lead changes and just one caution flag. The victory was not a cruise — Acosta had to work around Kenny Frisbie's #24, which paced the field for a race-high 28 laps, and Ian Blanchard's pole-sitting #74, which led 13 laps before ultimately fading to a fifth-place finish with four incidents on his card. Jason Coursey's #22 also factored into the lead battle, logging 11 laps up front before settling for fourth.

David Westergreen delivered a composed run in the #91, climbing nine spots from his P11 starting position to finish second and earn 35 points, though it is worth noting he crossed the line without a single incident on his sheet. His podium finish keeps his name in the conversation, though he enters this result without a win yet on the current season. Phoebe Quinones in the #12 spent one lap at the front from her ninth starting spot before slipping back through the field to finish 17th, while Daniel Gore's #4 led three laps from sixth on the grid only to finish 12th — a tough night for both drivers who briefly had a hand in the lead.

The story of the race from a sheer position-gained standpoint belonged to Cole Morton. The #94 launched from 21st on the grid and carved his way to a third-place finish, a gain of 18 spots on a one-caution, three-caution-lap afternoon at the two-mile Fontana oval. For Morton, it marks his first win — correction, his first podium finish in the Elite NextGen Series, a clean result aside from two incidents logged. Tony Brent also deserves mention, advancing 11 spots from 18th to seventh in the #28, while Brandon Hinton climbed nine positions from 20th to 11th in the #5 without a single incident.

In the standings, Tom Ringer sits atop the points table with 292, holding a 29-point advantage over Brandon Hinton's 263 after Ringer's ninth-place run tonight kept him consistent at the front of the order. Tommy Wynne is third with 255 points and Brian Sousa fourth with 248, meaning four drivers are separated by 44 points with 15 races still on the schedule — an extraordinarily tight fight that tonight's winner, Carlos Acosta, is now beginning to enter from fifth at 229 points. The Elite NextGen Series heads into its next round with the lead group compressing, and Auto Club Speedway has reshuffled the deck in what is shaping up to be a deep, punishing battle for the top spot.
